Unattached Christians seek burial place

Nagercoil: A group of Christians not attached to any denominations Monday staged a demonstration in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, to demand a separate burial ground.
“A common burial ground is a must for those who are not members of any specific denomination,” said J Tamil Selvan, president of the South Writer’s Movement that organized the demonstration.
He said Kanniyakumari district in the southern tip of mainland India has many Christians who are not members of mainstream denominations such as Catholic, Protestant, Salvation Army and Pentecostal Mission.
Some have ceased to be members of these denominations because of reasons such as no payment of membership fees, questioning lack of transparency or attending functions in another Church, reports The New Indian Express.
The demonstration took place in front of the Collectorate in Nagercoil.
Selvan said the Tamil Nadu government had earlier set up common burial grounds for these Christians in Chennai and Madurai, but not in Kanniyakumari district, home to a large number of Christians. The government should ensure honorable burial for the dead, he added.
