Proud of Christian education: Uttar Pradesh CM

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has promised all possible support to Christians in the northern Indian state.

The 41-year-old leader also said his Samajwadi (socialist) Party would ensure that all communities were treated with equality and respect.

Yadav was the chief guest at the platinum jubilee celebration of the Catholic diocese of Lucknow at St Francis’ College on Tuesday.

The CM said Christian institutions had left a rich legacy of spreading education among all irrespective of caste or class.

“What we have inherited and what we will leave for future generations is a big concern for us,” said Yadav, praising the Christian community for its contribution in the fields of education, charity and in spreading the message of peace and brotherhood.

“I take pride in saying I studied in a Christian institution and owe all my success to my school where I learnt the lesson of being secular, humanitarian and spreading comradeship,” the CM said.

Yadav released a special cover issued by the chief postmaster general, UP circle, on the Catholic Diocese of Lucknow’s completion of 75 years.

There was a dance performance and a function in which retired priests and Christian couples having completed 50 years of marriage were felicitated. The guest of honour for the occasion was the Vatican’s ambassador to India and Nepal Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio.

Bishops from different districts of UP and mayor Dinesh Sharma were also present on the occasion.
