Catholic Congress to organise mochana yatra in Kerala

People from different dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church will participate to highlight the problems of farmers.

Some 100,000 people are expected join a walk of deliverance (mochana yathra) that the Catholic Congress in Kerala plans aiming to highlight the current agrarian crisis, said Bishop Remigius Inchananiyil of Thamarassery said on Friday.

The walk start from north and south of the state, Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram on August 8, will converge at Angamaly near Trichur.

People from different dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church will participate to highlight the problems of farmers and issues related to the implementation of the Kasturirangan report.

Among the demands being raised by Catholic Congress are: land deed for land in possession of people before January 1, 1977 and demarcation of forestland before the implementation of the Kasturirangan report.

The walk will also draw attention to the plight of natural rubber farmers and farmers who have suffered crop losses on account of natural calamities and attack by wild animals.

The head of the Syro Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry will open the valedictory meet of the walk at Angamaly.
