Caritas invited to prepare disaster management plan for Bihar

Beside Caritas, eight other NGOs will intensively be engaged in all the 38 districts to submit the plans by end of November this year.

New Delhi (UCAN):

Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) has officially invited Caritas India to partner in developing disaster management plans for four districts of the state.

“In six months from now, Caritas India will submit district disaster management plans (DDMP) for four the districts of Saran (Chhapra), Siwan, Gopalganj and Buxar,” Fr. Frederick D’Souza, Executive Director of the organization, said.

Welcoming the Bihar government’s move in soliciting the role of NGOs and community-based organizations, he said that Caritas has been working for disaster risk reduction in the state for many years and therefore has a strong grass root presence, which will be an essential component for an inclusive and a pro-poor approach in the given assignment.

“Apart from the professional team that shall be engaged in executing the task, Caritas shall activate the robust network it has in the state of Bihar for smooth and timely operation of the project.” Fr. D’Souza assured.

As this is a state wide project, Caritas will collaborate with all district units, especially the district magistrate’s office in carrying out the project within its given time.

Beside Caritas, eight other NGOs will intensively be engaged in all the 38 districts to submit the plans by end of November this year.

The state government will sanction over 200,000 rupees in three installments to Caritas India to complete the project in six months starting June 2015.

“In the last one decade or less, Caritas have exponentially increased its investment through a number of development activities worth more than 200 million rupees in Bihar,” said M S Shimray, the Assistant head of department of Caritas India programs.

“Our goals have always been to compliment the efforts of the government while empowering the marginalized community’s participation in their economic development,” said Girish Peter, the north zonal manager based in Bihar since 2008.
