Reception accorded to Mochana Yatra

Pathanamthitta (Matters India): The Walk of Deliverence (Mochana Yatra) led by the All Kerala Catholic Congress (AKCC) president, V.V. Augastine, reached Pathanamthitta on Wednesday.

The Mochana Yatra, highlighting the ongoing agrarian crisis in the State, was accorded a rousing reception by the Church members at Ranni, Pathanamthitta, and at different places enroute.

Inaugurating the public meeting in Pathanamthitta town on Wednesday evening, Fr Justin Pazheipparambil, vicar general, said the farmers were put to much difficulties over one or the other reason, and this trend should be stopped. The vicar general alleged that the reports submitted by both the Madhav Gadgil Committee and the Kasturirangan Committee on Western Ghats were against the interests of the farming community and would plunge them into crisis, Hindu reported.

He said the Catholic Congress should be able to provide active support to the farmers to cross the hurdles before them.

Slump in price

The government should make effective interventions and address the crisis in the farm sector due to slump in the price of various farm produces, he said.

Jomi Domiic, AKCC Kanjirappally diocese president, presided the over meeting. Fr Mathew Palakkudy, diocese director, and Prof Josekutty Ozhukayil, also spoke.

Richen Kallarackal, AKCC zonal treasurer, presented a shawl to the Mr Augastine.
