Pope appoints bishops in India, the Philippines

Vatican City (Story: Matters India): Pope Francis on Friday appointed an archbishop to the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar, the capital of western India’s Gujarat state.

The Pope transferred Bishop Thomas Ignatius Macwan of Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar, to take over from Jesuit Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes who stepped down on reaching the retirement age of 75.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, the Pope appointed a new bishop to the Diocese of Gumaca in Quezon province. Fr. Victor ‎C. Ocampo, parish priest of St. Dominic de Guzman is the new bishop of Gumaca, whose see had been vacant since the transfer of Bishop Buenaventura Malayo Famadico to San Pablo in Jan. 2013, Vatican Radio reported.

Born in 1952, Fr. Ocampo studied philosophy and theology at San José Seminary, in Quezon City.

Following his priestly ordination in 1977 for Balanga diocese he worked in 8 parishes as well as served as director of various diocesan offices such as the catechetical office, the liturgical commission, the Biblical apostolate, the family and life commission and was also chancellor of the diocese and member of the consult.

He was also the diocesan administrator of Balanga diocese in the absence of the bishop.
