Mangalore attempts to implement Laudato si

The diocesan program is aimed at motivating Catholics to plant saplings, promote biogas, solar energy and reduce consumption of conventional energy.

Mangalore diocese plans a special program 'Nature's Protection-My Responsibility' to motivate Catholics to preserve the environment in response to papal encyclical 'Laudato si' (Praise Be to You),

Pope Francis in his second encyclical 'Laudato si' (Praise Be to You), sent to all bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, urged people across the world to make efforts to save the environment. 

In the encyclical, the pope shed light on consumerism and irresponsible development and lamented environmental degradation and global warming. He had called upon the people of the world to take swift and unified global action.

The diocesan program is aimed at motivating Catholics to plant saplings, promote biogas, solar energy and reduce consumption of conventional energy.

Diocesan spokesperson Fr Onil D'Souza told TOI that the papal letter has already received the appreciation of Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations. 

"Felicitation program will be held to honor heads of Catholic institutions and individuals, who have planted large number of saplings, installed biogas plants, and used solar energy," he said. 

He added that the diocese will hold Vanamahotsava every year.
