Kerala bishops plan stir against government inaction

Various church organizations had come up with the demand to implement the High Court order on pupil-teacher ratio.

Kochi (UCAN): The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC)’s education commission has decided to launch an agitation against the alleged inaction on the part of the state government in addressing issues related to the ‘teachers’ package’ recommenced by the government, despite a High Court order.

Various church organizations had come up with the demand to implement the High Court order on pupil-teacher ratio (PTR), expeditiously.

Setting aside the provisions in the teachers’ package, the Kerala High Court had ordered that a pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) of1:45 should be followed by managements of aided schools for teachers’ appointment, from the current academic year onwards.

“If the government fails to take steps to complete the staff fixation procedures and issue notification, non- approved teachers and their family members would stage a hunger strike in front of the Secretariat on January 12. It will be followed by a strike near the venue of the Kerala State School Kalolsavam, to be held from January 17 to 23,” said KCBC Education Commission Secretary Fr. Jacob Palakkappilly.

The commission also urged the state government to refrain from moving the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court order.

“The country’s development depends on human resource, and good administrators will not regret spending money on it. In Kerala, unfortunately, the government is unnecessarily worried about spending on human resource development,” said Fr. Palakkappilly.
