Catholic priest accused of raping former nun

The priest raped her while she was alone and also clicked her pictures.

A former nun in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh has accused a Catholic priest of raping her four years ago.

A case in this connection was registered Jan. 23 against the Fr. Fizo Chiramel. No arrest has been made yet.

"We have recorded the statements of both the parties and started investigation after registering a case under sections 376 (rape) and 506(B) (criminal intimidation) of IPC against the Fr. Fizo Chiramel of a church situated at Shyampura," said Upma Singh, in-charge of women police station.

According to the victim, she became nun in 2008 and a year later she was ordained to work at Shyampura church.

One day in April 2010, the priest raped her while she was alone and also clicked her pictures, she alleged, adding that he threatened to make the pictures public if she reported the incident.

The victim, who later gave up her vocation, mustered courage to approach the police after the accused was transferred from Sagar Catholic diocese, she said.

  1. The Catholic Church needs to revisit the good old celibacy rule for clergy. I personally do not love to blame this priest for what he is charged against. The truth is that only one among a hundred is caught. If there was a time when the Church could easily hide similar allegations and settle everything secretly, it is not easy and not at all feasible today. Rather than thinking of defaming them or throwing out of the circles, I request the Church to adopt a humanitarian attitude and redefine the vow of celibacy as optional.
