Bishop opens farmers’ fast in Kerala

A Charter of Rights was declared on the occasion.

Kottayam (UCAN):

Bishop Mathew Arackal of the Kanjirappally opened a fast and demonstration in Kottayam districtThursday demanding remunerative price for farm products and security for farmers' life and property.

More than two dozen farmers’ organizations, mostly functioning under the aegis of the Catholic Church, sat in a day-long fast in the Christian dominated town in Kerala.

Bishop Arackal, national patron of INFARM, an NGO functioning in the agriculture sector, said it is time mainstream political leaders ended the arrogance and anti-farmer stance.

“The farmers have no intention to oppose or defeat anyone. But we are only seeking security for our life and property and remunerative price for the farm products,” he said.

He urged famers to stand united to fight for their demand as only organized forces would be able to make gains.

A Charter of Rights was declared on the occasion.
