Basically there is no choice – Shri Joseph Chacko (Chennai) on Delhi Rite issue.

In the joint pastoral letter signed by the archbishops of Delhi and Faridabad who have the common area of jurisdiction have clearly wrote that all Catholics of Syro origin in the above area should join the new SMR diocese. Basically there is no choice.

In the Letter of the prefect of the congregation of oriental Churches, the Cardinal told a truth that “ There does not exist a general right to choose one’s RITE…..”(CCEO can 40  ; 3 and can.35)

The Faridabad archbishop wrote to Dr. James Kottoor that, there is absolutely no compulsion on any body to join the new diocese.

Then He says that “The faithful of any sui iuris Church are certainly welcome to participate actively in the liturgical celebrations of any other sui iuris Church.  Our faith must be practiced in peace and serenity and without any tension.”

From the letter, it is clear that the archbishop has memory problem and confussion about laws of the Catholic Church. Further he forgets that he has no power to allow double member ship to anybody and if he advises any ordinary faithful otherwise, it is against canon law. In Delhi the Latin Bishop may ask their parish priest to get the permission from SMR parish priest for giving certain sacraments to a syro, but in other parts like Chennai no Latin priest with self respect will act as an assistant to an SMR parish priest. 

I am sure that you have read the instruction of the prefect for the oriental churches carefully and my analysis is not necessary to understand it. If you could tell the archbishops of Delhi and Faridabad as well as the Cardinal, that some people can fool somebody for some time, but not all  for all the time.

As a writer you have the right and duty to tell the Catholics of Delhi and Agra   who have to stay there permanently, to register in the new SMR diocese and pay and pray,  but are free to  attend and receive sacraments from any Catholic church under Vatican.  This does not need the permission of a bishop or a cardinal.

It is understood that the Faridabad bishop has changed has swallowed his words and told the Delhi Catholics a white lie, that they can actively participate in the Latin Parishes (If they allow to do so), because of three reasons.

1. The people are protesting and may go legally for freedom to worship.
2. There are no SMR churches now and they may not get any, from the Delhi Latin rite bishop for love or money. 
3. Their attempt to collect THITHE from their new members has failed miserably.
4. There are no chances of getting finance from Kerala or abroad to build new Churches.

This reminds me of an old story of a missionary who came over a church rule.  There all ate meat for their food. When he advised them to avoid meat on Fridays they protested.  He suggested wisely, that they may sprinkle some water and convert meat into fish and eat.
