Arunachal government awards Salesian priest for youth skill development

Story By: Fr. Christudoss (Matters India) Dimapur: The government of Arunachal Pradesh state in northeastern India recently honored a Salesian priest for his outstanding contribution to skill development of youth.

Father Cyriac Pulinthanathumalayil, the awardee, is the founder director of Don Bosco Youth Centre in the state capital of Itanagar.

The center has helped hundreds of young people from the state to find jobs in various parts of the country. It imparts skills in computer, hospitality, spa and beauty, retail and tourism, spokes English and other soft skills.

His novel idea of developing the trainees’ personality and leadership skills during a residential motivational soft skills training, before venturing out of the state for further specialized training and placement, has enhanced the success rate of the government’s skill training programs.

Before coming to Itanagar, Fr Pulinthanathumalayil opened the Don Bosco Youth Centre at Khonsa in the insurgency-infested Tirap district and initiated similar activities for the welfare of young people.

The Salesian priest was among five gold medal winners Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki announced on the occasion of India’s Independence Day celebrations held at Itanagar. The government also announced ten silver medals and 13 commendation certificates for meritorious services to the state.

The awards will be given on February 20, the Statehood Day of Arunachal Pradesh.

Fr. Pulinthanathumalayil won the award when his congregation in Arunachal was celebrating the bicentenary of their founder Don Bosco`s birth on August 16.
