15 Christians reconverted in Tamil Nadu Ghar wapsi

 The Hindu Munnani plans to organize more such events across Vellore district.

Vellore: (UCAN) – Fifteen Dalit Christians belonging to five families were ‘re-converted’ to Hinduism at a ‘ghar wapsi’ (homecoming) ceremony near Latheri, Katpadi.

Hindu Munnani organized the ceremony last Tuesday in an Amman temple in Chengimottur, Vellore district, the Hindu news paper reported.

The five families were were involved in farming and lived in the Adi Dravidar Colony in Chengimottur, Latheri.

“This is the first ‘ghar wapsi’ ceremony in Vellore district," said K. Magesh, zonal president, Hindu Munnani, Vellore. According to him these persons had become Christians some eight to 10 years ago and "they were re-converted to Hinduism during the ceremony."

He said Hindu Munnani people contacted and counseled them on the need to return to Hinduism and they expressed the desire to return to Hinduism. "So, we arranged a ritual that was attended by several villagers,” he said.

Hindu Munnani’s State organiser K. Bhaktavachalam was present on the occasion.

Magesh said the organization plans to organize more such events across the district. Even in the same village several had been converted to Christianity and many are volunteering to re-convert. "We will organize the (Ghar Vapasi) ritual in various parts of the district," he said.

"We had not conducted ‘ghar wapsi’ ceremonies earlier as it caused too much of political controversy,” he said.
