This ugly Indian church must change!
This article titled "മാറണം, മാറിയേ തീരൂ!" written in almayasabdam blog (Malayalam) was my response on the heinous sex abuse case, recently unearthed in Kerala, according to which a Syro-Malabar top brass raped a 16 yr old girl and she eventually gave birth to a baby. Now, minimum 6 nuns 2 priests and 1 lay woman are on run to avoid arrest. The police says that a whole diocese was trying to hide the case. Most shameful was the allegation which Sundy Shalom made arguing that it is the girl who is the culprit. They had almost settled the case by forcing the girls father to admit having raped his own daughter. The full Church machinery was alleged to have been used all the way. This is a reply I had to write in response to what Joseph Mattappally and Chackochan Kalarikal, well-known Malayalam writer, Detroit, wrote in Almayasabdam blog (Malayalam) about the latest sex scandal of Fr. Robin Vadakkanchril, alias Mathew Vadakkanchil, 48, making headlines in Kerala and rocking the Syromalab Church. James kottor)

You both have all my heartfelt sympathies. After long struggle, study and search or research, I think I have found the answer to the Syromalabar Headache, which I wrote several times and proclaimed it publicly three years ago when I was forced to speak publicly to a Knanaya community meeting in the Syromalabar Cathedral Hall in Chicago, where Chackochan Kalarical from Detroit was another very, very important speaker (I think he should have been the Keynote speaker) who came all the way for that purpose from Detroit.
Sri Joy Oravana and Jose Kallidukkil were the main organisers. The only crime I committed to get invited as the Keynote Speaker, (and I was an Ignorant idiot about all the complicated ugly details of the pure blood marriage etc., about that later) was that I wrote a letter Cardinal Allencherry, at the request of a Knanaya group in Chicago.
This group opposed to pure blood marriage practice was terribly upset about something Cardinal Alancherry said in Chicago promising all help from Rome to get Endogamy practice in Chicago go on smoothly. This news came printed in Knana news bulletin in US and this group wanted Cardinal to correct it. If they wrote, the Cardinal may not answer, they said, so they wanted me by all means to write as a middle man or messenger. I said I may not get an answer either. Earlier I had written a series of letters to Cardinal, the last one signed by 18 prominent lay people in Kerala, to start a friendly vertical dialogue within the Church, between Syromalabar Hierarchy andthe concerned laity, and I had failed miserably. But in the case of Knanaya people’s complaint, I got the reply by return post.
The substance of Cardinal’s letter was: “Don’t worry james. When you come back we shall discuss it.” So I had to write back again to Alancherry saying the problem was not mine, as I am not a Knana, but theirs and I wrote to him giving their names and addresses, saying if he did not write to them a satisfactory letter they were bent on organizing the protest meet. Alancherry did not answser that letter. Result? They organised the protest meet, invited Bishop Angadiath as the Keynote Speaker, he refused, then they invited his vicar general, he also refused. Then the whole battalion came upon me urging to become the KEY, and Joy Oravana told Bishop Angadiath, Kottoor was going to be the speaker. Angadiath replied: “It is like inviting Pulikunnel to speak.” That is how became the “Keynote Speaker.”
Worst among divided Churches?
Do you know which is the most incorrigible church among the some 5000 or more divided churches in the world? For me it is the Zero, I mean the Syromalabar Church(SMC). So in my speech I said: Ambedkar once said: “I was born a Hindu but I shall not die a Hindu” as he converted to Buddhism later. Imitating him I said: “By no fault of mine I happened to be born in the Syromalabar Church, but I shall not die in it. Nor am I a member of any organised churches because divided and fighting churches are like Pharisee and publican praying in the temple. Does any of the divided churches admit that it is second to another? None! Each, including, or starting with the Catholic Church says, “I am better than all the rest.” So I see all as Pharisees and I don’t want to be with any of them. I am only a very, very distant, the last in the line if you will, follower of the Man from Galilee called Jesus.
As for Cardinal Alancherry (my best friend and enemy and I love him with a vengeance because Jesus wants me to love my enemies) my fervent humble request to him, is to follow the magnificent example of Pope Benedict XVI, to retire and go, go, go!” to confine himself to prayer for the conversions “of us sinners”. That is how I got rid of the Syromalabar hadache.
SMC’ disfiguring traits
First: Religious colonisation: The SMC is busy 24 hours in their fund raising programme, to build 50 crores churches in all major cities in India and in all wealthy nations of the world (Africa excluded) in their adventure called “Religious colonisation” to promote their Rite (Syro or Zero as you like it, for me it is Zero). So my suggestion is never give a penny when they come for any collection, tithe or whatever. You give directly to the poor around you.
Secondly raise the war cry: “Moratorium for building new Churches!” Why? Jesus never built any church to preach nor did he stay in any confort zone called Rectory. Recall Francis’s repeated call: “Get out of the Church of the sacristy. Go to peripheries.” Jesus found his listeners in the market place, in dusty streets, on hill tops, on fishing boats, that is, where people lived and worked.
Jesus didnot even have a postal address because he was to live only 3 years. Our bishops want to live to a hundred years (Centum annos vivas, vivas, they sing.) in the comfort zones of their Aramanas, palances etc., celebrating silver and golden jubilees, birthdays, patron feast days. When disciples asked him once, (apparently in an effort to tempt or entice him) pointing their finger at the Jerusalem temple which took 40 years to build they said; “Look master how huge. marvellous and spectacular are the stones with which it is built etc.”
Jesus’ blunt reply was; “Not a stone upon a stone will be left.” That is what is going to happen to all the Concrete marvels the Syro (SMC) church is building in major cities in India, in USA, Australia, UK, Middle East etc. To preach the Good News what you need to do in today’s internet world of globalization is to be constantly where the people are: on the Face Book, Twitter, Whatsup, Linkdin, Email. But every where you will have to ask and answer questions. That is what Jesus did — speaking, asking questions and answering the people.
Thirdly they worship the golden calf of Money. Religious colonisation itself is for fund raising, from US, Australia, UK etc. You need more telling detestable proof? Read the gripping story: “Njarackal Sistaers or Naboth’s Vineyard?” You can read it in CCV, Oct. 26/2016. It is an article written by the advocate who argued for the Sisters and put Ernakulam bishops in the dock and told clearly as in the Bible like Nathan: “That man is you” and the sisters won the case handsomely. More proof of mammon worship: Read again: “Garland of RS. Or $$$$ for Alancherry and bishops in CCV Oct. 20/ 2016 and another on Oct.21/2016 by Swami Sacchidananda. This is not to humiliate anyone. In journalism facts are sacred and opinions free. What I stated are dry facts.
Fourthly the case is against lazy priests who eat and don’t sweat, and so get sexy. Hard working pastors who are toiling and trudging seeking the lost sheep have no time to feel sexy. That story is now celebrated in the media and it started long ago with the Abhya case. And ever since ever so many episodes of Sexy priests and the Hymalayan effort of the Kerala Hierarchy to protect them has made God’s own country devils playground. There was a long story in the Week magazine about it with interviews with the secretary general of the CBCI.
Did the Zero (SMC) hand over any guilty priest caught red handed to the legal authorities, in spite of Pope’s repeated order to do that? In the Fr. Robin case the rumour making rounds is that conniving priests and sisters had almost convinced the girl and her Father to say that her Father impregnated her, according to report from Jose Mattappaly. Don’t fall senseless listening to such stories, but they are possible historic happenings right under our nose. And no Kerala bishop is reported to have made any public apology nor did any hang his head in shame to do penance in sack cloth and ashes during this Lenten season.
An awful lot more to write on this topic. Jesus never started a new religion, never instituted the present hierarchical priesthood (Read Mat.23, after saying all those nasty things against high priests like Cardinals, do you think he became one among them?) If he did, he was following the American policy: “If you can’t beat them join them!” Did he become one of the High priests whom he called: “Hypocrites, white washed sepulchres, brood of Vipers?”
So I beg your permission to stop here. If you all decide to become just followers – near or distant — of the Carpenter of Nazareth, all these problems of problem priests, sexy priests, fund raising priests etc will come to a sudden halt. Just think of it at least! I have chosen my path prayerfully. You don’t have to follow me, as I believe; I am an ignorant Idiot of many things, who is sure of only one thing: “Yes the only thing I know for certain is that I do not know and that applies to things in this world and in the next.” This is in spite of my constant effort to learn as much as possible from my 18th year. I don’t know if I succeeded.
And I think, all the hierarchical high priests are pontificating about other worldly things which they know nothing of. Life is a mystery and a little while more I will be with you and a little while, you will see or hear me no more. Only too happy to go wishing you God’s blessings, if there is a God to bless. james

Thanks for sending it to me; very true. What you wrote there is just wonderful. Jesus did no such thing as build a church, nor was he a priest or high priest; the author of Hebrews made him a high priest. The corruption started already in the New Testament times.
You carry on for a few years more – that will do good to the Church.

കുറ്റക്കാരായ വൈദികരെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ മറവിൽ ഇരയെ നിലം പരിശാക്കുന്ന ജോലിയും ചിലരുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ മുറക്കു നടക്കുന്നു; കൊക്കനച്ചന്റെ കേസിൽ കുട്ടിയും കുടുംബവും സാത്താൻ സേവകരായി, ഫിഗെരസിന്റെ കേസു വന്നപ്പോൾ കുടുംബം അഭിസാരികയുടേതായി, സി അഭയായുടെ വീട്ടുകാർ മാനസിക രോഗികളായി…. കണ്ണൂരിൽ മകളെ മാനഭംഗപ്പെടുത്താൻ അഛനുമുണ്ടായി. ദൈവം തന്ന സാമാന്യബുദ്ധി ഉപയോഗിക്കാനോ ചിന്തിക്കാനോ മിനക്കെടാത്ത ഒരു വിശ്വാസീസമൂഹം പരുവപ്പെട്ടിടത്താണ് ഇതൊക്കെ സാദ്ധ്യമാവുന്നതെന്നു കാണുക.
കഴിഞ്ഞ ഏതാനും ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലും സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയായിലും വന്ന വാർത്തകളും കത്തോലിക്കരുടെ തന്നെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളും സമാഹരിച്ചാൽ ഇങ്ങിനെ പറയാം – സഭ ഒരു പിളർപ്പിലേക്കു തന്നെയാണു പോകുന്നത്, വേണ്ട തിരുത്തലുകൾ നടപ്പാക്കാനുള്ള ആർജ്ജവം അധികാരികൾക്കില്ലായെന്നതു തന്നെ കാരണം. സഭ വിട്ടു പോകുന്നവരുടേയും, കൂദാശകൾ സ്വയം നിഷേധിക്കുന്നവരുടേയും സംഖ്യ ക്രമാതീതമായി വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നു. ഈ അടുത്ത ദിവസം ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുടയിൽ മരിച്ച ഒരു മദ്ധ്യവയസ്കൻ സ്വശരീരം മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിനു കൊടുക്കാൻ വില്ലെഴുതി വെച്ചിരുന്നു. അത്തരം വില്ലുകൾ ഒന്നല്ല.
സർവ്വവിധ ആർഭാടങ്ങളും തികഞ്ഞ പള്ളിമേടകളേപ്പറ്റി മാത്രം ചിന്തിക്കുന്ന വൈദിക സമൂഹത്തിന് ഒരിക്കലും ആർക്കും ആത്മീയത പകർന്നു കൊടുക്കാൻ കഴിയുകയില്ലെന്നു നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. വൈദികരെ പള്ളികളിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചു വിളിക്കുകയെന്നത് ഒരു പരിഹാരം. സഭയുടെ ഭൗതിക സ്വത്തുക്കൾ മുഴുവൻ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ കെൽപ്പുള്ള അത്മായർ ഇവിടുണ്ട് – സഭയുടെ സ്വത്തുക്കൾ മുഴുവൻ അത്മായന്റേതാണ്. അവർ സഭയെ നിയന്ത്രിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു – അന്നു സഭ വളരുകയായിരുന്നു, വൈദികർക്കു സമൂഹത്തിൽ ഒരു വിലയുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
കുറച്ചുകാലം മുമ്പ് തൊടുപുഴയിൽ സലോമി ആത്മഹത്യചെയ്തപ്പോൾ സമൂഹം കാണിച്ചതിന്റെ പത്തിരട്ടി ശക്തിയിലാണ് ഇന്ന് പൊതുജനത്തോടൊപ്പം ചേർന്നു കത്തോലിക്കർ സഭക്കെതിരെ മുറുമ്മുന്നത്. നിരവധി വൈദികരാണ് നേരിട്ട് ഫെയിസ് ബുക്കിൽ വന്ന് അഭിപ്രായം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ആർഭാടത്തിന്റെയും അധികാരത്തിന്റെയും പിരിവിന്റേയും സുവിശേഷം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാൻ സഭാധികാരികൾ തയ്യാറാകുന്നില്ലെങ്കിൽ, അവരെ അതിനു പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കാൻ എല്ലാവർക്കും കടമയുണ്ട് – കാരണം, സഭ അവരുടേതു മാത്രമല്ല.
ഒരു പരിഹാരം, വിശ്വാസപരമല്ലാത്ത എല്ലാ ആഹ്വാനങ്ങളോടും
പൂർണ്ണമായി നിസ്സഹകരിക്കുകയെന്നതാണ്. സഭാധികാരികളെ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കാൻ ആ ചലനത്തിനു കഴിഞ്ഞേക്കും. അതു നാളെ മറ്റൊരുവൻ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതല്ല, ഇന്നു ഞാൻ ചെയ്തു തുടങ്ങേണ്ടതാണെന്ന് ഓരോരുത്തരും കരുതുക.

തീർച്ചയായും സാർ, പേരാവൂരിൽ നിന്ന് കത്തോലിക്കാ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ സ്ഥലംവിറ്റു പോകുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചുവരെ ചിന്തിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. അത്രക്കും മാരകമായ മുറിവാണ് കൊട്ടിയൂർ സംഭവം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മധ്യവയസ്കനായൊരു പള്ളിവികാരി പതിനാറുകാരിയെ പീഡിപ്പിച്ചു ഗർഭസ്ഥയാക്കി എന്നതിനേക്കാൾ ഭയാനകം, പിതൃത്വം പെൺകുട്ടിയുടെ തന്നെ അപ്പനിൽ ആരോപിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുകയും, പെൺകുട്ടിയും എന്തിന് അവളുടെ അമ്മയടക്കം ആ കൊടുംനുണ സമൂഹത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ സമ്മതിക്കാൻ തയ്യാറാവുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നിടത്താണ് സഭാസംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ കരുത്തും ജീർണ്ണതയും വെളിപ്പെടുന്നത്.

ശ്രീ. മറ്റപ്പള്ളി എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത് നൂറുശതമാനം ശരിയാണ്. പത്തുമുപ്പത്തഞ്ചുവർഷങ്ങൾക്കുമുന്പ് സഭയിലെ പ്രഗല്ഭരായ ചില അല്മായർ – പ്രഫസർമാരായ എം. വി. പൈലി, കെ. എം. ചാണ്ടി, പി.ടി. ചാക്കോ, ജോസഫ് പുലിക്കുന്നേൽ, സ്കറിയാ സക്കറിയ, തുടങ്ങിയവർ – ചേർന്ന് അന്നത്തെ സഭാധികാരികളുമായി സഭയെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് ചില കാര്യങ്ങൾ സംസാരിക്കാൻ ഒരവസരം തരണമെന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് ഒരു നിവേദനം നൽകിയിട്ട് അതിനൊരു മറുപടിപോലും നൽകാതെ അവരെ അവഹേളിക്കുകയാണ് അന്നു ചെയ്തത്. ഏതാനും വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുമുമ്പ് ഡോ. ജെയിംസ് കോട്ടൂരും മാറ്റ് മൂന്ന് അല്മായരും മാർ ആലഞ്ചേരി മെത്രാപ്പോലീത്തായ്ക്ക് ചർച്ചയ്ക്കുള്ള ഒരവസരം തരണമെന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് കത്തുനൽകിയിട്ട് അദ്ദേഹവും മൗനം പാലിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. വൈദികരെയും സന്യസ്തരെയും കന്യാസ്ത്രികളെയും അല്മായരെയും സഭാകാര്യങ്ങളിൽ ക്രിയാത്മകമായി പങ്കുചേർത്തിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ സഭയിലെ മൂല്യച്യുതിയ്ക്ക് കുറെയെല്ലാം അറുതിവരുത്താൻ സാധിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. അതിന് സർവ്വാധികാര്യസ്ഥന്മാരായ മെത്രാന്മാർ വഴങ്ങേണ്ടെ?
'ലൈംഗികതയും പൗരോഹിത്യവും' എന്ന എൻറെ പുസ്തകം 2011-ൽ ഞാൻ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഒരു കൊച്ചച്ചൻ പ്രതികരിച്ചത്, "ഇതെല്ലാം എഴുതി ലോകരെ മുഴുവൻ അറിയിച്ചിട്ടെന്തുകാര്യം?" എന്നാണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ കൊട്ടിയൂർ റോബിൻറെ കാര്യം ലോകം മുഴുവൻ പാട്ടായില്ലേ കൊച്ചച്ചാ?
